2 brigades of Brigadier General John Buford's First Union Mounties Department had been bivouacked on McPherson's Ridge, northwest of Gettysburg, when Heth's Division of Hillside's Corps (Army of Northern Virginia) approached from Cashtown on July 1st. Realizing that this was the very first element of the whole Confederate Military, and that the commanding elevations of Cemetary Ridge (1 1/4 miles behind him) was the most effective defensive terrain for a hundred miles, Buford recognized what he needs to do. With much less than 3,000 troopers he should hold the vangard of the Confederate Army up until the Union infantry might arrive. He understood his casualties would certainly weigh yet he also understood there was no one else to do the work.

McPherson's Ridge is a regimental level likeness of the first hrs at Gettysburg. The Union player must hold and delay the Confederates on a collection of ridges until the First Corps can arrive. The Confederate player should attempt to take Gettysburg and safeguard the elevations of Cemetary Ridge.
